Mansfield's Engineering Sector Is Overpaying for Talent. We Are Ending the 20% Agency Tax.

The Local Reality: Mansfield's Engineering Deficit and the Cost of Inaction

Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, remains a vital industrial and manufacturing hub within the East Midlands. According to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), manufacturing and engineering activities in the Ashfield and Mansfield districts account for over 14.5% of local employment—significantly higher than the UK national average. This concentration of industrial activity, centered around key commercial corridors like Hermitage Lane, Crown Farm Industrial Park, and the Millennium Business Park, has created an intensely competitive landscape for engineering leadership.

As senior engineers retire or migrate toward regional hubs like Nottingham and Sheffield, local firms face a structural deficit of qualified Engineering Managers. Traditional recruitment agencies exploit this local scarcity. By locking employers into contingent-fee models (typically charging between 15% and 25% of a candidate’s starting annual salary), these agencies artificially inflate the cost of business growth.

The Data: Real Salary Benchmarks vs. The 20% Tax

Data from the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) combined with regional East Midlands labor market indices indicates that the median salary for an Engineering Manager in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire is £67,500 per annum. Outstanding specialists or those managing complex multi-site operations frequently command up to £75,000.

When a Mansfield manufacturer hires an Engineering Manager at the median rate of £67,500 using a traditional recruitment agency charging a standard 20% fee, the cost structure looks like this:

• Starting Salary: £67,500
• Traditional Agency Fee (20%): £13,500 + VAT
• Total Direct Cost of Recruitment: £81,000

By contrast, the VacanCV process bypasses this commission-based penalty entirely. For a flat campaign fee of £795, we deliver the exact same local talent pool, saving Mansfield employers an immediate £12,705 per placement. This represents a staggering 1,598% Return on Investment (ROI) compared to legacy contingent agencies.

Why Traditional Agencies Are Failing Mansfield Employers

The traditional contingent recruitment model is fundamentally misaligned with the needs of modern manufacturing firms. When you engage a commission-based agency, you are not paying for advanced sourcing methodologies; you are paying for their overheads, commission structures, and the cost of their failed campaigns elsewhere.

Standard agencies rely on outdated databases and passive CV matching. In tight geographical labor pools like Nottinghamshire, the best Engineering Managers—those currently optimizing production lines, reducing downtime, and managing multi-disciplinary maintenance teams—are not browsing job boards or register-submitting their CVs to legacy agencies. They are passive. To reach them, recruiters must use targeted programmatic outreach, which legacy agencies rarely have the technical capability to execute.
